What this tool does

It gives you a straight answer to a simple question: how risky is this sport, really? You pick or type in a sport and get a danger rating out of 10, along with the injuries that happen most often, any fatality figures that exist, and a quick comparison with other activities so the number actually means something.

The aim is to cut through the usual talk of sports being either "perfectly safe" or "a death wish" and show you what the evidence says, in plain language.

When to use it

It is useful if you are thinking about taking up a new sport and want to know what you are signing up for, or if you are a parent weighing up a club your child wants to join. It also helps if you coach or run sessions and need a quick sense of where the main risks sit, so you can talk to players or parents honestly.

It is not a medical tool and it will not tell you whether you personally are fit to take part. For that, speak to your GP or a qualified coach. Think of this as a starting point for research rather than the final word.

How it works

Type the name of any sport, from football and rugby to climbing, boxing, horse riding or something more niche. The tool pulls together a short summary covering the overall risk rating, the injuries you are most likely to see, any fatality data that is publicly reported, and some practical safety advice. You get the result on screen in a few seconds. Nothing you enter is stored, and you can run it as many times as you like to compare different sports side by side.
